Tag Heuer Monza 2016 Review

The iconic Tag Heuer Monza was first introduced in 1976, one year after the historic win on the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. Designed by Jack Heuer, the original watch had a then uncommon all-black look featuring racing-inspired red hands and counters. In 2000, Tag Heuer went in a slightly different direction, as the company issued a more elegant version of its sport chronograph. Now in 2016 the Swiss watchmaker celebrates the 40th anniversary of its iconic timepiece and has announced the release of the new Tag Heuer Monza. The new Monza is closest to the original 1976 watch. Although somewhat retro-looking, the timepiece is actually a mix of the two previous models. It features the casing of the second generation and combines it with the dial and overall color design of the original, the combination which results in a retro yet modern looking watch. The new Monza has a 42mm titanium casing with a carbide coating. Made to be lighter and more shock resistant, the case features domed AR-coated sapphire crystal and is water resistant up to 100 meters.

The screw-down case back is numbered and has an engraved “Monza Heuer” emblem. The watch has the crown and pushers made out of bare steel but, unlike the 1976 version, this edition features all 3 buttons on the same side of the casing. The dial features hours, minutes and chronograph seconds hand as well the two sub-dials: the minute chronograph counter at 9 o’clock and the running seconds at 3 o’clock. Thanks to the vintage orange SuperLuminova™, the dial is perfectly readable even in dark conditions. The dial is equipped with a pulsometer ( measures the heart rate) and a tachymeter (converts time into speed). Also placed on the dial we have another “Monza Heuer” logo and the date aperture at 6 o’clock.

This anniversary watch is powered by TAG Heuer’s Calibre 17 automatic chronograph with 37 jewels. Working at a frequency of 28,800 vph, the modular movement enables a power reserve of 42 hours.
